Why is the first diagram slightly egg shaped? Without the lines left and right it is round. Please don't tell me this is because it had been easter this weekend :)

I get a very different output than you do, which is definitely not your fault. Rather, in general I find that the automatic graph drawing algorithms seem to make things harder than simplifying them.
